After seven seasons as intelligent, driven and devoted daughter Rory on TV’s Gilmore Girls, Alexis Bledel has gone on to star in films such as Post Grad and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. These days, Bledel’s attention is focused not just on pants, but dresses, purses, boots and plenty of other clothing items as she makes her stage debut in off-Broadway’s fashion-centric hit Love, Loss and What I Wore. Broadway.com caught up with Bledel to chat about her own fashion memories and her days in Gilmore’s humble town of Stars Hollows.
Love, Loss and What I Wore marks your stage debut. Why did you decide to try theater?
I’ve never worked with a live audience and I thought this show would be a fun way to ease into theater work. The writing is so great, and I’m a huge fan of Nora and Delia Ephron, so this was a pretty easy decision. Having the audience was [nerve-wracking] at first, but now I find it so satisfying because you have people laughing immediately when something is funny.
Do you have any clothing-related memories that would work in the show?
We actually talked about that in rehearsal, and my high school uniform, a khaki pleated skirt with a blue wool blazer, came to mind. I loved it because I didn’t have to figure out what to wear every day. I’m not really good at figuring out what goes together and it takes me a long time to get it right. By the time I was a senior, though, I hated it and wanted to burn it after graduation. A year later, I started Gilmore Girls and I had to wear Rory’s school uniform for four years. Hers was much cuter than mine, but I couldn’t believe I was back in uniform.
Do you ever go back and look at the clothes you wore on Gilmore Girls?
I haven’t had a TV in five years! I think it’s time to get one [laughs]. I don’t watch the show that much, but I remember her clothes. TV clothes have to be very colorful so they pop on a small screen. After the show wrapped, I was given a lot of the clothes; I’d gravitate toward brighter colors when I went shopping on my own, so I had an obnoxiously bright personal wardrobe.
When Gilmore Girls ended in 2007, Rory was following Barack Obama on the campaign trail. What do you imagine she would be up to these days?
I think she would be working at a newspaper, probably in Washington or New York. She was so interested in journalism and I think eventually she’d travel abroad. She looked up to [ABC news correspondent] Christiane Amanpour, who’s always out on location and getting to the nitty gritty.
Do you enjoy dresssing up for magazine shoots and show-biz events?
Occasionally. I don’t mind getting dressed up because I have a great stylist and she knows what goes together. It depends on what the event is. It’s not the most fun to go out and promote yourself, but sometimes I get invited to really fun places, especially since I moved back to New York. There’s art related events, theater openings, political events and so much going on here that’s not the Hollywood type stuff.
What do you love about living in New York?
I feel much more inspired creatively here on a daily basis, which I can’t say I ever consistently felt in L.A. There’s something about the pace of the city that gives me energy and toughens me up a little bit.
You star in Robert Redford’s new Civil War-era film The Conspirator. What was it like to be directed by him?
Surreal and really amazing. He knows exactly what he’s looking for, but leaves you a little bit of room to be an artist as well. He keeps you on your toes because sometimes he will be inspired by something and change a line right before you shoot, but everything he does makes perfect sense. He’s been doing it forever.
After Love, Loss and What I Wore, do you think you’ll return to theater?
I would love to. I feel more at home onstage than I ever thought I would. I thought it’d be weird because I’m so soft spoken, but there’s so much you can do with your voice on the stage. I really hope I get this opportunity again.

Name: Alexis Bledel
Age: 29
Neighborhood: Brooklyn
Occupation: Actress. She’ll be appearing Off Broadway in Love, Loss, and What I Wore at the Westside Theatre starting today, January 12, through February 13.
Who’s your favorite New Yorker, living or dead, real or fictional?
John Lennon. When I think about all the things that were going on in this city during the nine years he lived here, there’s an energy that stands out having to do with the message of peace he so powerfully sent out into the world.
What’s the best meal you’ve eaten in New York?
Brick-oven pizza. So delicious, charred crisp and light, just with garlic, ricotta cheese, and fresh basil at Lucali, or olive oil, arugula, and prosciutto at Otto. John’s of Bleecker Street … everything on the menu is good. Roberta’s is also amazing.
In one sentence, what do you actually do all day in your job?
I pretend to be someone else, taking part in a collaborative storytelling endeavor.
What was your first job in New York?
A shoot for Seventeen magazine, when I was 14. It was a hair-and-makeup piece, and I ended up with a rather peculiar set of stringy dreadlocks.
What’s the last thing you saw on Broadway?
Promises, Promises. I really loved it. Sadly, Kristin Chenoweth was not there for the show I caught, but her understudy, Sarah Jane Everman, was wonderful and played so well opposite Sean Hayes. He was an absolute dream in that role; his comedic timing was impeccable and seemingly effortless.
Do you give money to panhandlers?
I do sometimes. It’s hard not to when the person is handicapped in some way that looks as though they would have a very hard time finding employment, or if someone is trying to sell something that might be handy, or share their musical talent with you.
What’s your drink?
In the winter I like to just sip on one Jameson straight up.
How often do you prepare your own meals?
Almost every day. I try to eat very healthy, organic, local foods, so I do end up preparing my own meals more often than I go out. I prefer to go out for a drink because in that case you pretty much know what’s being poured into your glass, as opposed to what’s going into your food.
What’s your favorite medication?
DayQuil.
What’s hanging above your sofa?
A multicolored Moroccan rag rug.
How much is too much to spend on a haircut?
I suppose it’s all relative to what you spend on other things, but $150 seems like a lot.
When’s bedtime?
2 a.m. or so.
Which do you prefer, the old Times Square or the new Times Square?
I generally try to avoid Times Square because it is always so crowded, but I think I prefer the old version because I feel nostalgic for the first time I saw it (which was probably on that same trip into town for Seventeen). Standing there made my heart beat a little bit faster … maybe because I was looking up and felt nervous about being sideswiped by a car.
What do you think of Donald Trump?
I wonder if he has a signature dance move.
What do you hate most about living in New York?
Blizzards.
Who is your mortal enemy?
The lat machine at my gym. We hate each other.
When’s the last time you drove a car?
About eight months ago, when I was last in L.A. for meetings. I don’t love to drive, and I used to be quite dangerous on the road because I tend to be running late. Now I make it a point to take my time and end up arriving everywhere I go about half an hour early.
How has the Wall Street crash affected you?
Work slowed down for a while. It added to my general confusion about what goes on in the business world.
Times, Post, or Daily News?
Times.
Where do you go to be alone?
Swimming.
What makes someone a New Yorker?
Attitude.

We’re sitting in Beverly Hills at a hotel chatting with beautiful, blue-eyed brunette Alexis Bledel. You probably first met her as Rory Gilmore in The Gilmore Girls or followed her to Greece in The Traveling Pants movies. Now you can see her as a completely modern young New York career gal choosing between two guys in The Good Guy.
Ever feel trapped by your relationship? Is he and only he in control? Do you always go for the wrong type when the great guys are right there…ignored by you? Then you’ll totally identify with Alexis’ character Beth as she must choose between hot, ambitious Tommy (Scott Porter of TV’s Friday Night Lights), and tall, handsome, sweet Daniel (Bryan Greenberg of One Tree Hill and the movie Bride Wars).
Alexis is wearing a cute dress off the rack at H&M and we got her to talk about modern relationships, why women pick guys who are maybe too much in charge and how she enjoyed that fact that the film is very “real”, even including a romantic love scene break to reach for a condom!
Alexis verified there will be no more Traveling Pants films and we talked about her very different upcoming role as a young woman living in the 1800’s in The Conspirator. Continue reading…

She chatted with PopEater about that possibility, and how the show kept her out of trouble while the rest of young-and-beautiful Hollywood was out in the clubs.
She also talked about her new movie The Good Guy (out Friday), the occasional ‘Sisterhood’ reunion and what it was like working with one of Hollywood’s most handsome men, Robert Redford.
Would you bring back Rory and do a Gilmore Girls movie?
I don’t know. I was really happy with the way they wrapped up the series in the finale and I thought they brought the story full circle. It was very satisfying for me. I don’t know what the story would be, but I would be curious to find out what it would be.
How come I never saw any photos of you drunk in clubs? How did you avoid the pitfalls?
Fatigue. I was working so many hours on that show. We worked really long hours, and I moved to LA without knowing anyone so the people you saw on the show were the people I knew. There wasn’t much clubbing going on. Continue reading…

Alexis Bledel left TV after Gilmore Girls to forge a new career on the big screen with the hit Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants films.
Now she’s found herself caught between two hunks in The Good Guy. Parade.com’s Jeanne Wolf discovered Bledel’s own take on finding that elusive man of her dreams.
Love isn’t always a many splendored thing.
“The Good Guy does start out with my character having this kind of ideal fantasy of romance that I think we’re encouraged to have in movies — you know, those sweeping generalizations about the power of love and how fantastic it can be. But she gets a wake-up call that kind of brings that down to Earth. Being in love is such a complex thing because when a girl falls for a guy she wants to be swept away and doesn’t want to have to think about all the realistic possibilities. But you have to walk the line and be ready to make mistakes in relationships.”
She’s made some herself.
“Sure I have. I think everybody is disappointed sometimes. I think everyone has a different perspective, a different point of view in terms of what they’re looking for. I try to just be in tune with what is right for me. Sometimes you’re right about a guy, and sometimes you’re wrong. It’s like Vegas kind of. But that’s real life.” Continue reading… Thanks to Anne Marie for the head-up!
